Brenda Nicholson creates her art with a technique called pyrography, which is the use of a burning needle to draw black lines and words in wooden bowls, plaqes and wall hangings.
She applies watercolor to the images and seals everything with 3 coats of water-based polyurethane.
Just as she has a variety of sizes and shapes of wood to work with, she also has a variety of themes in her work ranging from nature and animals to old time log cabins, barns, mills and local history, while the calligraphy is mostly verses from the Bible.
The bowls are hand turned by either Kenneth Nicholson, Brenda herself, Earl Rice or Harold Crook. Wall hangings are made from local wood. Kenneth cuts the wood and then she planes it and then decorates it with woodburning and painting.
She has been doing pyrography since June 2000. She is a self taught artist.
